CounterPath, iMeet, ooVoo Advance Mobile Video Conferencing
Judging from the pace of recent announcements, mobile video conferencing may be a hotter topic than SMB video conferencing. In the past week alone, at least three suppliers have come out with new offerings. One is CounterPath, which is adding video conferencing capabilities to the next edition of its Bria soft phone for iPhone. This is the first step in a strategy to extend integrated voice, messaging, presence and video calling to all leading PC and mobile platforms.
IMeet is bringing its mobility suite to the iPad and iPhone. IMeet HD, based on HTML5, works through the browser and takes advantage of the large screen of iPads and other tablet devices. iMeet Mobile for iPhone is a native iOS app that works on iPhone and iPod touch.
And OoVoo, a cross-platform video chat and SMB video conferencing service, has now extended video chat capabilities to 200 Android devices. OoVoo Mobile Chat is a free download from the Android Market. OoVoo already offered video chat for iOS devices.
Adding mobile capabilities, however, adds considerable complexity to video conferencing solutions. For one thing, it means having to make sure a solution works with an even larger range and variety of screen sizes, processing power levels and bandwidth levels. More important, it makes it harder for a solution to move beyond straightforward video conferencing. Integrating collaboration tools will be a particular challenge. Sharing screens documents and other data is tricky even with varying desktop or room devices. Add mobile devices to the mix, and it becomes trickier still.
